[Well. Katsu looks at least a little chipper. He's got a Santa hat on with a big red bow stuck on the front.]

[He also has a very badly cut paper snowflke in his hands.]

So, I'm wondering. What holidays does everyone celebrate here in the winter? I know we have a lot of people from different worlds... I'm just wondering what the celebrations are like in each of them.

Where I am from, we celebrate the Winter Solstice. It is a quiet celebration, but it is one of hope.

Oh? That sounds nice... what kind of celebrations happen then?

People get together with those closest to them and speak of the year that has passed, usually over a dinner. At midnight, we light a candle and pray for our hopes for the new year. There are gifts given, but only to those you want to thank for their care during the year that has passed. It is not so obligatory as Christmas gifts seem to be.

I see. It's more serious...

Christmas in my world is usually more of a shopping holiday than anything else, it seems.

I've come to notice that. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, though. People certainly enjoy giving and receiving gifts!

They do. It's a nice way to show someone that you care.

[Guy chokes back a chuckle as his feed turns on and he sees the hat.]

That's an interesting fashion statement.

We actually don't have many holidays in Auldrant; certainly nothing like the "Christmas" that people seem to be celebrating around here... People will get together on the longest night of the winter for the celebration of the passing year. So I suppose that can count as a sort of "holiday", in a sense.

It's kind of traditional... but it does look kind of ridiculous, yeah.

[Huh. He nods, and smiles.]

Are there gifts exchanged, too?

It really depends on what continent you're on and what kind of company you're in. The aristocrats in Kimlasca give fancier gifts to those among their families as well as to close political ties, while those in the lower quarters of the city seem to be more interested in the merrymaking and togetherness of the day. Sometimes simple gifts are exchanged, but most of what I've seen is a lot of food and a lot of storytelling, haha.

[He opens his mouth to continue -- then pauses -- then speaks again, a bit hesitantly.] I'm... not positive about how they celebrate in Malkuth - heh, I've only heard about it via travelers and just poking around here and there. I know the Malkuth Empire has a grand feast in the capital of Grand Chokmah. But I can't be certain what else they practice.

How about you? I take it that you're a little familiar with Christmas?

Kimlasca and Malkuth are two of the continents, I take it. But those both sound nice.

[He nods again.]

My country doesn't really celebrate Christmas in the religious aspects, usually. It's more of a time to get together with the people you love and exchange gifts with them. There's usually a tree that you put presents under, and lots of good food and songs.

Haha, that's a close guess - they're the two countries that inhabit Auldrant, but both have their good share of one or more of the larger continents. [His fault for not clarifying that. Ah well.]

[He nods - he's seen decorated trees about the city, so he assumes that's a common practice.] Religious or not, I believe the holiday is a fine idea. I wonder what it is about this time of year that encourages togetherness. Not that I mind it at all, haha. It's just interesting to think about.

Ah, okay. And hm... it might be the cold. Everyone wants to be inside and warm, maybe.

That's a good point. But I was thinking more the friendliness, or just being with people you care about. Haha, I'm not sure that the cold alone is the cause of that.
